About us

Old facts, new facts, but real facts – facts matter!
We transfer facts, we transfer knowledge!

Bergamin Bookstore & More is an independently owned non-fiction online bookstore in The Netherlands with a real physical cultural appearance and a lot of events, readings, seminars, workshops, open discussion rounds or fireside chats on most beautiful locations like restaurants or theatres. Although we are geographically based in The Netherlands, we feel ourselves as world citizens free from national borders and we are able to offer books & services all over the World.

Books we have the passion and enthusiasm for

Our books have integrity which tackle consensuses head on, whether those concern colonialism, racism or politics of various stripes. We’re not afraid to go against the grain if we think the book is a real contribution, it’s saying something fresh. What we try to do is be entirely frank and not look over our shoulder. The core business of Bergamin Bookstore & More consists of books and e-books we have the passion and enthusiasm for. Every year amazing, beautiful – yes, great – books are published that deserve to be promoted. These are especially books in the field of African Studies, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, South Asian Studies and War, Conflict and International Relations, History, Religion and humanitarian affairs mostly in English, but also in Dutch, German, French as well as Spanish, Italian and Arabic. More broadly, however, we promote also anything that interests us, from Photography and Art to Cooking, as long as they have something to distinguish them.

The books on our website are reviewed regularly in high profile media outlets worldwide, including The Economist, The Sunday Times, Financial Times, The Guardian, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs and others; in German by Die Zeit, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), and in French for example by Le Monde.  These books are an enrichment for any discussion about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). On 25 September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, along with a new set of development goals that are collectively called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Bergamin Bookstore & More strongly supports these 17 SDGs and 169 targets on sustainable development as we see this not as just a “government business” but a need in participation from every single human being on this world.

We want to share knowledge and the books we supply from Houses like Hurst Publishers’, I.B.Taurus, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press of Harvard University Press, The Brookings Institution have a great impact on politics and society and are written on a very nice and understandable way. This kind of books in a world of “fake” news will have an important impact on society and we see real knowledge as most effective antidote to any calls of exclusion of people, discrimination and racism.

Knowledge is the most effective antidote to any calls of exclusion of people, discrimination and racism

The challenges the world faces on the economic, ecological, moral, cultural and social levels are vast. The authors of the books we sell are from diverse creeds, ideologies and backgrounds. We want to transfer their knowledge for the take on racism and discrimination, and to tackle exclusion, inequality and injustice.
